Bringing point-of-care ultrasound education to resource-limited settings across the Caribbean and beyond — building local capacity and lasting partnerships.
Windward Ultrasound
Windward Ultrasound is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting high-quality education and guidance in Point-of-Care Ultrasound and Emergency Medicine, with a focus on serving nations and regions outside the United States. Stony Brook faculty have been core contributors since the organization's first ultrasound course in Saint Lucia in 2017, sharing the conviction that portable, affordable POCUS makes a real impact on patient care in the Caribbean islands.
Developing Emergency Medicine
Stony Brook's Developing Emergency Medicine group supports the growth of emergency medicine as a recognized specialty in countries where it remains nascent. Faculty serve as educators, curriculum developers, and mentors — helping local physicians build the infrastructure, training programs, and clinical standards that define a functioning emergency medicine specialty. The initiative works hand-in-hand with the EM Ultrasound Division's international POCUS training efforts.
Active Programs
Castries · Gros Islet · Dennery · Soufrière
Flagship international initiative in partnership with Windward Ultrasound, delivering structured POCUS training to physicians across Saint Lucia's major hospitals and polyclinics. The program began in 2017 with the first ultrasound course at Victoria Hospital in Castries, training emergency room physicians and residents in a newly formed EM residency. Teams split between OKEU Hospital in the north and St. Jude Hospital in the south, then rotate through Dennery and Soufrière polyclinics — bringing point-of-care ultrasound to every major care site on the island.
Windward Islands
Through the Windward Ultrasound consortium, Stony Brook faculty bring portable point-of-care ultrasound education to island nations throughout the Eastern Caribbean. The program's conviction — that affordable, durable POCUS is an ideal tool for resource-limited environments — has made a measurable impact on quality of care across the Windward Islands.
International Partnerships
Stony Brook's Developing Emergency Medicine initiative supports the growth of emergency medicine as a specialty in countries where it remains nascent. Faculty serve as educators, curriculum developers, and mentors for physicians building the foundations of emergency care in their home countries.
